Mercy Watson is a series of chapter books written by Kate DiCamillo and illustrated by Chris Van Dusen. Mercy Watson is also the fictional pig who stars in the series. Mr. and Mrs. Watson have no children. So one day, they go for a ride. They go for a drive in the country when they come to a farm that has a sign: "Pig for Sale-Cheap". Beside the sign stands an unusual pig. The farmer tells Mr. and Mrs. Watson that the pig is named Mercy and she is no ordinary pig. Instead of eating slop like other pigs, Mercy likes to eat toast with lots of butter on top, and she sleeps in a bed like a human, and she also likes to dress up and do things that other pigs cannot do. Mr. and Mrs. Watson decide to get Mercy. They take her home, and she becomes their new pet. ''Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride'' was a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book in 2007 —one of three runners up for the Geisel Award. Six Mercy Watson books were published from 2005 to 2009 by Candlewick Press of Somerville, Massachusetts.〔 ("DiCamillo, Kate" ). Library of Congress Authorities. Retrieved 2012-04-13.
